In Lee Cole's novel Groundskeeping, first person narrator Owen attempts to start his life over by attending classes and groundskeeping at Ashby College in Kentucky. Although living with family and in the same area where he grew up, Owen feels unmoored and displaced. When he meets the enigmatic visiting writer Alma, Owen convinces himself that he can balance his attempts to change his life with a new intimate relationship. Over the course of the novel, Owen's intimacy with Alma and growing investment in creative writing complicate his journey towards self-actualization. The novel explores themes including loneliness, story, and identity.
