Eastbound by Maylis de Kerangal is a French novel translated to English by Jessica Moore, based on a short story named “Lignes de Fuite” (Lines of Flight) by de Kerangal that was broadcast on French radio in 2010. It tells the story of Aliocha, a young man from Moscow who has been conscripted to the Russian army, as he tries to escape military service with the help of Helene, a French woman he meets while both are traveling on the Trans-Siberian railway.
