Did You Hear About Kitty Karr is a work of both literary and historical fiction set during the twenty-first century and during the era of Jim Crow. The main setting of the novel is California although Kitty’s early life is set in the South. The story follows Kitty as she climbs her way up the Hollywood ladder and helps other Black people in the process. It also follows the St. John sisters as they learn and come to terms with the fact that Kitty is actually their grandmother. Key themes include the effects of skin color on Black women, the insufficient but valiant ways that women try to protect each other, the manner in which bodily autonomy was taken away from women in the past, the negative effects of secrecy, and the difficulty but ultimately hope of women and people of color someday finding true freedom.
