Daddy (Sylvia Plath) Overview

“Daddy” is a free verse poem in sixteen quintains by American poet Sylvia Plath. It was written in October of1962, just four months before Plath died by suicide. It was published posthumously three years later. The poem uses an apostrophic structure to explore the psychological rapport between its speaker and her dead father. The poem ultimately represents a woman's attempt at liberation from abusive patriarchal relationships and oppressive societal structures.
