"Bonfire Opera" is a narrative poem by American poet, teacher, and essayist Danusha Laméris. Originally published in The American Poetry Review in 2017, "Bonfire Opera" later appeared in Laméris' 2020 collection of the same name. The poem is concerned with the boundaries of embodiment and how this is expressed through art. The speaker in "Bonfire Opera" recounts how an older woman in her community used to disrobe and sing naked in the sea. To the speaker, this shows the intertwining relationship between beauty and the fundamental yearning for freedom.
