Audition Overview

In Kate Kitamura's novel Audition, the unnamed first person narrator starts to doubt herself, her marriage, and her choices when a young man named Xavier surfaces in her life. In Part 1, Xavier believes the narrator is his estranged birth mother. In Part 2, the narrator is in fact Xavier's mother. These competing versions of reality convey the narrator's ongoing attempts to reconcile what her life has been with what her life could have been. Toying with conventional notions of linearity, the novel explores themes including identity, family, and truth.
