A Valediction Forbidding Mourning (Adrienne Rich) Overview

"A Valediction Forbidding Mourning" is a free verse lyric poem by the American poet Adrienne Rich. Rich wrote the poem in 1970 and published it the same year in A Will to Change, one of her collections of poems. The poem takes its title and its theme from a poem by 16th-century English writer John Donne, who wrote a poem of farewell to his wife by the same title. Rich returns to the theme of parting from a lover, but steeps the poem in modern idioms and metaphors, updating its themes for her audience.
