A Sonnet to the Noble Lady, Lady Mary Wroth Overview

"A Sonnet to the Noble Lady" is a sonnet written by poet and playwright Ben Jonson. It is dedicated to Mary Wroth, an English noblewoman and writer who is often credited as the first woman to write a sonnet sequence in English. The poem's composition history is obscure. It was probably written while Jonson was writing masques for court performance, as Wroth appeared in at least one of these plays. It was first published in Jonson's Works, a collection of his plays and poems that he had published in an expensive folio format. The poem is a courtly romantic sonnet, speaking of Wroth's virtues as a poet and as an object of romantic desire.
