A Lady's Guide to Fortune-Hunting, by Sophie Irwin, is a romance novel that shares Kitty Talbot's quest for an affluent husband. Kitty is a young woman who becomes solely responsible for supporting herself and her four younger sisters after their parents die. With few other options to women in 1818, Kitty sets out to find a wealthy husband willing to take on the financial responsibility of Kitty and her sisters. Kitty is successful when she becomes engaged to Lord James Radcliffe. She considers the outcome of her search for a husband even more of an accomplishment because she and James are in love. The novel's main themes are limitations placed on gender, social hierarchy, the methods of a fortune-hunter, love, and family roles.
