Zeta plain is fertile lowland in Montenegro. It stretches from Podgorica in the north to the Skadar lake in the south. It is the biggest plain area in Montenegro. The average altitute of Zeta plain is around 40 m above sea level. The name "Zeta" derives from an early root meaning "harvest" or "grain" (modern words žetva and žito). Confusingly, Zeta River flows not through Zeta plain, but through other significant valley in Montenegro, Bjelopavlići. As plain and fertile lands are rare in Montenegro, Zeta plain is one of the most densely populated areas in Montenegro. The vast wineyards of "Plantaže", Montenegrin quality wine producer, are situated in Zeta plain. It also has ideal conditions for growing all kinds of Mediterranean fruits and vegetables. The plain is also the site of Podgorica Airport and Podgorica Aluminium Plant, which is considered to be the worst pollutant of the plain, making life in the surrounding area difficult. Golubovci town is the biggest settlement in the plain, and is capital of Golubovci urban municipality, which encompases most of the plain.
