Yamanashi (山梨市 Yamanashi-shi?) is a city located in Yamanashi Prefecture, Japan. In spite of the name, it is not the capital of the prefecture, which is Kofu. On March 1, 2005, the city had an estimated population of 39,631. The total area is 289.87km².

The city was refounded on March 22, 2005, when Yamanashi (1st) merged with two municipalities from now defunct Higashiyamanashi District to create the city of Yamanashi (2nd).
