Park History
Over 50 years ago Wonderland Amusement Park was the dream of, Paul and Alethea Roads. Searching for a site the Roads looked at an ugly, barren hill in Amarillo’s Thompson Park. It seemed that Wonderland Park dream would die right there, for lack of water, no trees, just scrub grass and sand burrs,
Mr. Roads recalls. "It was pitiful." So pitiful that he and Alethea headed home. "We only got so far as Canyon, when we decided to give the location a second look. Mark Miles then the city's Parks and Recreation director, promise to transplanted trees and grading to level the area. Mark Miles convinced the Roads to give Amarillo a try. A few months later Kiddie Land was opened with three children's rides and a makeshift ticket booth made out of a box from one of the rides, Kiddie Land was an instant hit. Mr. Roads had to choose between the park and his day job. He chose the park and has never regretted the decision. Through the year’s addition of rides with wide appeal to all ages, the Roads decided on changing the name of the Amusement park to Wonderland, inspired by Alice in "Through The Looking Glass."
