Willard Hall

Willard Hall (December 24, 1780 – May 10, 1875) was an American lawyer and politician from Wilmington, in New Castle County, Delaware. He was a member of the Democratic-Republican Party, who served in the Delaware General Assembly and as U. S. Representative from Delaware. Hall was born in Westford, Middlesex County, Mass., on December 24, 1780; attended the public schools and Westford Academy; was graduated from Harvard University in 1799; studied law; was admitted to the bar in 1803 and commenced practice in Dover, Del.; secretary of state of Delaware 1811-1814; elected as a Republican to the Fifteenth Congress; reelected to the Sixteenth Congress and served from March 4, 1817, until January 22, 1821, when he resigned; unsuccessful candidate in 1820 for reelection to the Seventeenth Congress; again secretary of state in 1821; member of the State senate in 1822; appointed United States district judge for Delaware and served from May 6, 1823, until December 6, 1871, when he resigned; moved to Wilmington, Del., in 1825; compiler of the Revised Code of Delaware in 1829; delegate to the State constitutional convention in 1821; president of the Wilmington School Board 1852-1870; died in Wilmington, Del., May 10, 1875; interment in Wilmington and Brandywine Cemetery.
