The Whitney Biennial is a biennial exhibition of recent American art, typically by young and lesser known artists, on display at the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York City, USA. The event began as an annual exhibition in 1918. The Whitney show is generally regarded as one of the leading shows in the art world, often setting or leading trends in contemporary art. In 1987 the show was protested by the Guerrilla Girls for its alleged sexism and racism In 2002 WhitneyBiennial.com, an exhibition dedicated to digital art, was founded. Since 2000, the Bucksbaum Award has been awarded to an artist exhibiting at the Biennial. The 2006 exhibition was curated by Chrissie Iles and Philippe Vergne.
