West is a city in McLennan County, Texas, United States. The population was 2,692 at the 2000 census. Despite its name it is located in the central part of Texas, north of Waco. Also, most of the city is located on the east side of Interstate 35.

Geography
West is located at (31.803369, -97.093106)GR1. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.6 square miles (4.0 km²), all of it land.
Demographics
As of the censusGR2 of 2000, there were 2,692 people, 1,045 households, and 698 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,731.1 people per square mile (666.3/km²). There were 1,143 housing units at an average density of 735.0/sq mi (282.9/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 92.09% White, 4.20% African American, 0.56% Native American, 0.07% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 1.78% from other races, and 1.26% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 8.14% of the population. The majority of the Anglo population is of Czech descent; West bills itself as "the kolache capital of Texas". There were 1,045 households out of which 33.0% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 50.7% were married couples living together, 11.8% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.2% were non-families. 29.6% of all households were made up of individuals and 18.1% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.43 and the average family size was 3.03. In the city the population was spread out with 25.3% under the age of 18, 6.8% from 18 to 24, 25.9% from 25 to 44, 17.0% from 45 to 64, and 25.0% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females there were 85.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 76.6 males. The median income for a household in the city was $32,580, and the median income for a family was $43,090. Males had a median income of $30,292 versus $22,825 for females. The per capita income for the city was $15,421. About 13.7% of families and 15.9% of the population were below the poverty line, including 19.5% of those under age 18 and 17.6% of those age 65 or over.

West is the home of Major League Baseball player Scott Podsednik, a member of the 2005 World Series championship Chicago White Sox team.
