Waldo is a city in Alachua County, Florida, United States. The population was 821 at the 2000 census. According to the U.S. Census Bureau's 2004 estimates, the city had a population of 784. The city has received national attention and earned the ominous distinction of being one of only two official speed traps designated by the American Automobile Association (the other being Lawtey a few miles to the north)[1], due to the city's strict enforcement of the local speed limit on U.S. Route 301 as it cuts through town.

Geography

Waldo is located at 29°47′23″N, 82°10′15″W (29.789831, -82.170881)GR1. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 4.5 km² (1.7 mi²), all land.

Demographics

As of the censusGR2 of 2000, there were 821 people, 347 households, and 207 families residing in the city. The population density was 184.3/km² (477.5/mi²). There were 407 housing units at an average density of 91.4/km² (236.7/mi²). The racial makeup of the city was 76.61% White, 15.23% African American, 0.49% Native American, 0.49% Asian, 0.73% from other races, and 6.46% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.07% of the population. There were 347 households out of which 27.4% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 40.3% were married couples living together, 16.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 40.1% were non-families. 33.1% of all households were made up of individuals and 14.1% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.37 and the average family size was 3.05. In the city the population was spread out with 26.1% under the age of 18, 8.3% from 18 to 24, 27.3% from 25 to 44, 22.8% from 45 to 64, and 15.6% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females there were 91.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 84.5 males. The median income for a household in the city was $24,028, and the median income for a family was $34,643. Males had a median income of $25,083 versus $20,956 for females. The per capita income for the city was $15,397. About 13.6% of families and 16.7% of the population were below the poverty line, including 23.0% of those under age 18 and 14.2% of those age 65 or over.
