WADE is an AM Radio Station broadcasting on 1340 kHz. The station is owned by the Inspirational Deliverance Center of Waxhaw, North Carolina, but the city of license is Wadesboro, North Carolina, one county east in Anson County, North Carolina. The station broadcasts an Urban Gospel music format, with various preaching programs throughout the day.
History
WADE began broadcasting in 1947 as a daytime operation on 1210 kHz. The station was founded by Risdon Lyon and his family. For nearly 50 years, this was the only station licensed to serve Wadesboro and Anson County. By the 1960's, two sister stations had been added to the group, WRPL (now WOGR) in Charlotte, North Carolina and WKDX in Hamlet, North Carolina. The station played a variety of music styles, including Country Music, Top 40 and Soul Music. WADE made an attempt to add FM service to their operation in Wadesboro. A construction permit was issued in 1983 to Lyon Radio, Incorporated, for an FM station on a fequency of 93.5 MHz. At the same time, WADE applied for, and received FCC authorization to move to 1340 kHz, a Class D channel, adding nighttime coverage at 1000 watts. Efforts to build the FM station ended with the 1985 death of Risdon Lyon. The Bible Broadcasting Network later re-initiated the construction permit and built the station to serve the southeastern part of the Charlotte Metropolitan Area as WYFQ-FM. For several years following Mr. Lyon's death, WADE endured several off-air periods and attempts to find a successful format to compete against FM stations in neighboring areas that were drawing more listeners in the area. Finally in the mid 90's, the Lyon Family sold WADE, the last of their radio holdings, to the Inspirational Deliverance Center of Waxhaw, North Carolina. For several years, the new owners simulcast the programming of Charlotte station WOGR, but by 2001 they had begun their own separate programming for the station.
