Bairrada wine, vinho da Bairrada, is produced in the Região Demarcada da Bairrada. The name "Bairrada" is from "barros" (clay), referring to the clayey soil of the region. Although only classified in 1979, it is an ancient vineyard region. The Baga casta grape is predominant. The Bairrada region produces red and white table wines. It is also notable for its sparkling natural wines, "Conde de Cantanhede" and "Marquês de Marialva". Luis Pato produces some of the best examples in the region, although he has opted to exclude his wines from the Bairrada appellation designation and instead receives a regional one. Bairrada wine is typically consumed in restaurants with roasted piglet, the 'leitão da Bairrada'.
