The grade II listed red-brick Victoria Building, designed by architect Alfred Waterhouse was opened in 1892 and is a well known landamark in The University of Liverpool The Building was the inspiration for the term "red brick university". The term was coined by Professor Edgar Allison Peers to describe the group of universities founded in Britain's industrial cities during the Victorian era in his books Redbrick University (1943) and Redbrick and these Vital Days (1945).

Use

Originally the building was the administrative centre of the university housing the university library and the offices of most of the senior academics. Recently the building has mostly unused as the univerity's administration has been moved to the newly built Foundation Building. The Victoria building is set to re-open in July 2008 as the Victoria Gallery and Museum and will house most of the university's art collection including work by John James Audubon, Lucian Freud, J. M. W. Turner, Jacob Epstein and Augustus John along with various scientific objects from the university's "hertitage collection".
