FAU UP History

The UP in its current form was established in 1998 after being shut down for a period of nine months. It re-started up as a broadsheet but since has changed its format to a tabloid or magazine sized paper. In 2007, the UP redesigned its online product and added daily news, blogs, videos from Owl TV and music from Owl Radio. It has become the first such college newspaper to do so in the country.

FAU UP Editor selection

The UP's editor selection is modeled after the University of Florida's student-run newspaper. The student body president, outgoing editor in chief, a professional journalist, a faculty member and the UP's adviser sit on a panel to determine the next semester's editor in chief. The five judges interview the candidates during an open meeting that anyone is allowed to attend including the staff. Once the judges are finished interviewing the candidates the audience is allowed to ask questions. At the end of the process each judge openly casts their vote.

Controversy

The Florida Atlantic UP has gone through several controversial periods since its 1998 inception as well as before adviser Michael Koretzky was hired in 1998 after the paper was shut down. Just about all of the controversies involved FAU's Student Government who happens to fund FAU's student-run media. Student Government attempted to lock the UP's staff out of their offices, stop paying them and fire its adviser Michael Koretzky after a story was published that detailed SG's leaders giving themselves a 25%, 6-month retroactive pay raise.
