The Union Navy, also known as the United States Navy, was the naval force that fought for the Union in the American Civil War. It had two principal missions:
- Naval blockade of Southern seaports, interdicting Southern commerce.
- Capturing and protecting river systems, in conjunction with the Union Army, in the heart of the Confederacy.
