Union County is a county located in the U.S. state of South Carolina. In 2000, its population was 29,881. Its county seat is Union6. It is included in the Union, South Carolina Micropolitan Statistical Area.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 516 square miles (1,336 km²), of which, 514 square miles (1,332 km²) of it is land and 2 square miles (5 km²) of it (0.35%) is water.

As of the census² of 2000, there were 29,881 people, 12,087 households, and 8,497 families residing in the county. The population density was 58 people per square mile (22/km²). There were 13,351 housing units at an average density of 26 per square mile (10/km²). The racial makeup of the county was 67.81% White, 31.05% Black or African American, 0.15% Native American, 0.18% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 0.16% from other races, and 0.61% from two or more races. 0.67% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race. There were 12,087 households out of which 29.40% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.80% were married couples living together, 16.80% had a female householder with no husband present, and 29.70% were non-families. 26.80% of all households were made up of individuals and 11.90% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.44 and the average family size was 2.93. In the county, the population was spread out with 23.80% under the age of 18, 8.20% from 18 to 24, 27.90% from 25 to 44, 24.40% from 45 to 64, and 15.60% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females there were 89.00 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 85.30 males. The median income for a household in the county was $31,441, and the median income for a family was $37,661. Males had a median income of $29,371 versus $20,701 for females. The per capita income for the county was $15,877. About 11.10% of families and 14.30% of the population were below the poverty line, including 18.70% of those under age 18 and 15.90% of those age 65 or over.
