Uniform Memory Access (UMA) is a computer memory architecture used in parallel computers having multiple processors and probably multiple memory chips. All the processors in the UMA model share the physical memory uniformly. Peripherals are also shared. Cache memory may be private for each processor. In a UMA architecture, accessing time to a memory location is independent from which processor makes the request or which memory chip contains the target memory data. It is used in symmetric multiprocessing (SMP). Uniform Memory Access computer architectures are often contrasted with Non-Uniform Memory Access (NUMA) architectures. UMA machines are, generally, harder for computer architects to design, but easier for programmers to program, than NUMA architectures.
