USS Sumner has been the name of three ships in the United States Navy. The destroyer was named after World War I Marine Corps Captain Allen M. Sumner. The survey ship, AGS-5, was named after the 19th century Navy captain Thomas Hubbard Sumner. T-AGS-61 was named to commemorate her predecessor, AGS-5, as well as Captain Thomas Sumner.
