USS Montana (BB-67) was to be the lead ship of her class of battleships in the United States Navy. She was the third ship to be named in honor of the 41st state. Montana was authorized July 19, 1940, and assigned to the Philadelphia Navy Yard. Before her keel was laid, construction was canceled July 21, 1943. Montana was the second battleship and third ship overall to be given that name; however, both battleships (the other being BB-51) were canceled. As a result, Montana is the only state in the union during the modern battleship building period (1906-1946) to not to have had a battleship completed in its honor.
