U-A was the official call-sign of one of fourteen U-Boats that made up the Foreign U-Boats of the Nazi German Kriegsmarine during World War II. The Foreign U-Boats were fashioned from captured submarines of other countries, modified, and then deployed with German crews to function as a normal U-Boat. U-A itself was formerly a Turkish boat. U-A was commissioned on April 30th, 1939 under the initial command of Hans Cohausz, and later Hans Eckerman. U-A was attacked on March 8th, 1941, by the HMS Wolverine, but survived. During its service, it sank 7 allied ships, including the British 13,950 ton HMS Andania. Only 9 ships in total were destroyed by the Foreign U-Boat corp. U-A destroying 7 of those, while damaging another 3. It was decommissioned and scuttled on May 3rd, 1945, as the war was drawing to a close.
