Tristan or Tristram is a given name of Celtic origin. It is derived from the Brythonic name Drust or Drustanus, and became popularized through the character of Tristan, one of the Knights of the Round Table in Arthurian legend. The modern form is most likely influenced by the French word triste, meaning "sad" or "sorrowful". There are various alternal forms of the name: Tristram, Tristen, Tristian, Tristin, Triston, Tristyn and Trystan. Tristan is now a popular name in the United States, and has been among the top 1,000 names given to baby boys since 1971.[1] Tristan is also sometimes used as a surname in the United States.
