Total Drama Island is an animated series which premiered on Teletoon July 8, 2007. The show is created by the creators of 6teen, also a show airing on Teletoon.

Synopsis
The series is about twenty-two teens sign up to star on a new reality show similar to Survivor called Total Drama Island, taking place at a camp called Camp Wawanakwa, located on an island in an unspecified area in Muskoka Ontario. They are divided into two teams, the Screaming Gophers and the Killer Bass.[3] Every three days, the losing team would be called to the campfire at night, and the host would pass out marshmallows. Those who had the marshmallows would stay, while the one who did not get a marshmallow would be voted off the island, and have to walk down the Dock of Shame to the Boat of Losers, which would take them away. This continues on until one person remains on the island (besides the host of the show and the chef in the mess hall). The last contestant would win a $100,000 prize (which the host is certain the contestant would "blow in a week" as he put it). In the end, Owen won the final contest and the money.
Characters
Main article: List of characters from Total Drama Island Twenty-two teens have been accepted to a summer camp/reality show. After they are split into two groups of eleven, (the “Screaming Gophers” and the “Killer Bass”), the challenge, drama, and romance between the characters had begun.
Elimination
One by one every week, contestants get eliminated due to failure of challenge, whenever the team votes against them, or if they are forcibly ejected out from the camp, much like the fashion of Izzy. The losing team is sentenced to the Bonfire Ceremony, where one of the campers is voted off. There are many similarities with the elimination rounds, as well as many variations and uniquenesses. Whenever a couple is broken up, their partner would express their feeling in a later episode (including Gwen's revenge at Heather, Geoff's heartbreak and Duncan's anger). Midway through the competition, the rules changed almost entirely. When Eva and Izzy return, teams Killer Bass and Screaming Gophers have been entirely abolished. With twelve contestants for themselves, all of the contestants vote each other off.

Production
Total Drama Island is directed by Todd Kauffman and Mark Thornton. It is targeted at 8-12 year olds and the creators Tom McGillis and Jennifer Pertsch studied what pre-teens liked and disliked about reality TV shows in the writing process.[4] Fresh Animation and Zoom Animation co-produced the series.[5] The budget for the series was US$6.5 million dollars.[6] It was animated in Flash,[7] by Elliott Animation.[5] Total Drama Island has also been dubbed into French. Every cast and crew member on Total Drama Island had to sign a confidentiality agreement not to tell who the winner was.[8] All the characters were designed by Kauffman.[9] Various voice actors on 6teen have also lent their voice for Total Drama Island; Christian Potenza as Chris; Terry McGurrin as Duncan; Megan Fahlenbock as Gwen; Adam Reid as Justin; Stephanie Anne Mills as Lindsay and Katie; and Rachel Wilson as Heather. The above play the roles of Jude, Jonesy, Jen, Wayne, Kirsten, and Melinda Wilson. Also, Lindsay nearly resembles Kristen of 6teen. Emilie-Claire Barlow plays a recurring role on 6teen, and is Courtney on Total Drama Island.[10] A second season of Total Drama Island is "in the works",[9] and a smaller group of the characters from season one will return.[11]
Total Drama Island Interactive
Total Drama Island Interactive is an online game separated into a semi-RPG in which the player has to play games to earn points for marshmallows. Marshmallows are used as money in the game so the player can buy other items for the players' appearance. The top 22 players at the end of the season will be entered into a draw to have their customized avatar edited into the final episode of the season.[12] Total Drama Island Interactive is produced by Xenophile Media. The winner of this challenge is Chaserocks, who was put in the episode as an intern recently hired by Chris the test the safety of the second stage of the final challenge; a pair of planks bridging a gorge. He manages to stay on the plank for just a few seconds before falling off and being eaten by the camp's freshwater sharks in the water below.
