""The Take Over, the Breaks Over"" (the quotes being part of the song's title) is the third (fourth, including the digitally released "The Carpal Tunnel of Love") single and second track from Fall Out Boy's album Infinity on High. Its title was taken from Jay-Z's 2001 song "Takeover". Akon has recently covered ""The Take Over, the Breaks Over"" song on BBC Radio 1's Live Lounge.[3] The song features two guitar solos performed by Ryan Ross (from Panic! at the Disco) and Chad Gilbert (from New Found Glory).

Music video

The music video is in grayscale and features the band performing in a dream of Pete Wentz's dog, Hemingway. When the video depicts the inside of Hemingway's brain, you can hear the intro of "This Ain't a Scene, It's an Arms Race", a line from "Dance, Dance", and then a line from "Grand Theft Autumn / Where Is Your Boy" (these song at the start of the video may be a parody of Backstreets Boys' Larger Than Life video.). It begins with Hemingway sleeping on young Wentz (played by Alex Wolff), who is sitting beside a fire hydrant. The video then cuts to a new angle, where the band is seen performing next to a 1968 Chevrolet Impala while Hemingway is seeing multiple objects which are in some way or another associated with dogs. These include fire hydrants, bones falling from the sky, breakdancing postal workers and dancing catwomen, and also lead vocalist/guitarist Patrick Stump dressed in a large cat head at one point and dressed as a steak at another point. The steak, contrary to the rest of the video, is not in grayscale, but is in normal color. The video then cuts to a bunch of ex-Fall Out Boy fans all wearing black and white shirts walking over to the band and throwing water balloons at them, all the while saying how much they dislike Fall Out Boy. They yell at them saying how they don't like them anymore and that they've been "forgetting them". T-shirts worn by the fans include titles such as: "Sell Out Boy", "Everybody Hates Pete" and "Pete Who?". These accusations are in reference to claims that Fall Out Boy "sold out" since their musical style has changed from their previous albums, and they have involved product placement in previous videos from "Infinity On High". The band defend themselves in the only way they know how: by making fun of the situation and including such accusations into their videos to show they still listen to their fans. Hemingway (in a cape) howls and says, "Give the boys a break... everybody changes". The fans nod their heads, and Hemingway continues, "I mean, look at me. I used to be tiny." The fans then nod their heads and join Fall Out Boy while they're playing.. The postal workers and catwomen are also dancing along. Wentz then says to Hemingway, "I didn't know you could talk!" Hemingway replies, "Shut up Pete... this is my dream." After finishing the song, Wentz falls suddenly in the dream and Hemingway abruptly wakes up, jumping off of Wentz. The video was filmed in one day when Fall Out Boy were in New York City. Total Request Live had had the song listed in the voting page under the misspelled title "The Takeover, The Breakover". The song had reached number-one for the first time on July 11, 2007, and has since been number-one seven times on the countdown.

Trivia

  • When performed at the Decaydance Fest at Hammersmith Apollo, London, August 22, 2007 and at Jones Beach Amphitheatre on June 5, 2007, Travis McCoy from Gym Class Heroes joined the band and performed a special rap intro over an extended version of the song.
  • The line "Wouldn't you rather be a widow than a divorcee?" refers to the controversial suicide of Kurt Cobain (seeing as some believe Courtney Love murdered him because he was divorcing her).
