Sir Digby Chicken Caesar and his sidekick Ginger are recurring characters created by British comedians and actors Robert Webb and David Mitchell. The character originally appeared in the radio series That Mitchell and Webb Sound as Sir Digby Caesar-Salad, but later became Sir Digby Chicken-Caesar for the television version, That Mitchell and Webb Look, shown on BBC2. When Sir Digby returned to radio, his name had become Sir Digby Chicken-Caesar.

Characters

Sir Digby is a London vagrant who appears to be under the impression that he is a heroic Sherlock Holmes-type character in a Victorian melodrama who is constantly pursued by his "nemesis", who he describes as "some bastard who is presumably responsible". Sir Digby frequently encounters his nemesis' henchmen, who usually take the form of policemen or anybody who happens to stand in Sir Digby's way. It is made quite clear that this is a pose; Sir Digby is an unrepentant criminal, an alcoholic and user of illicit drugs. He claims to stand up for “truth, justice and getting smashed for under a fiver”. Ginger is his Watson; a quiet dogsbody who has been the victim of sexual abuse and whom Digby sometimes forces into prostitution. Sir Digby wears a ragged tweed overcoat, fingerless gloves and a deerstalker hat. He effects the vocabulary and manner of a gentleman, addressing people as ‘my good woman” and referring several times to “my club”. When making his escape from the scenes of his various crimes, Sir Digby is accompanied by melodramatic 1930s cinema chase music (Devil's Gallop) to which he sings along.
