The River Niger was a Tony Award-winning play by Joseph A. Walker. It was first performed by New York City's Negro Ensemble Company off-Broadway in 1972. The play proved to be a hit and moved to Broadway in 1973 at the Brooks Atkinson Theatre, where it played 162 performances. It was adapted by Walker for the big screen in 1976, which starred Cicely Tyson and James Earl Jones.
