The Record is a daily newspaper based in Stockton, California and serving San Joaquin and Calaveras counties. It is owned by Ottaway Community Newspapers, which is a subsidiary of Dow Jones & Company.

History

The Record was founded in 1895 as the Evening Record. In 1969, Speidel Newspaper, Inc. bought The Record and the newspaper introduced its Sunday edition. In 1987, Gannett Company bought The Record. In 1994, Omaha World-Herald Company bought The Record. On May 5, 2003, Ottaway Community Newspapers bought The Record. Ottaway Newspaper is the Local Media Group for Dow Jones and Co. The Record is headed by Roger W. Coover, President & Publisher since 1997. In 2006, The Record took a strong Internet initiative to where the digital media has expanded its presence in the online. In 2007, The Record has changed its brand to San Joaquin Media Group in reflection to the diversification of the information products and services offered in the market. In 2007, the San Joaquin Media Group launched 209Vibe as part of its diversification efforts. 209Vibe is a Web site and alternative monthly newspaper covering music, culture and entertainment in San Joaquin and Stanislaus counties. In 2007, the San Joaquin Media Group launched SJCrime.com as part of its diversification efforts. SJCrime.com is a Web site with information about crime in San Joaquin County. In 2008, the San Joaquin Media Group launched eSanJoaquin.com, a local search engine, as part of its diversification efforts.
