IMDb profile

The Master is a 1989 Hong Kong action/adventure film starring Jet Li and Yuen Wah. It was directed by Hark Tsui and written by Kei To Lam, Tai-Mak Lau and Hark Tsui. Jet Li's character comes to America to meet his old master. In America he is helped by an American during a robbery attempt. He tries to meet his teacher, who has been thrown out of his home for not being able to repay loans. Later, it turns out that the American who once saved him is a martial arts teacher, who wants to establish his school's supremacy in the city, and hence challenges the master, Yuen Wah. Jet Li's character comes to his master's rescue and kills the American teacher.

Box Office

The Master earned a weak HK $8,096,542 in Hong Kong.

US Version

Miramax's North American version of The Master, which was distributed on home video and DVD, was dubbed in English, and the dubbing often strayed heavily from the original dialogue. Four minutes of cuts were made, including: - The opening scene, in which Anna fights a gymnastics student. - A scene of Anna being banned from gymnastics school. - A scene of Jet Li walking through Los Angeles is cut slightly. Also, acoustic guitar music replaces the original, more somber score, changing the intentions of the scene significantly. - A scene in which Jet, after the clinic is raided, finds Anna beaten up.
