Contents

Primary school

The primary section caters for boys from seven to twelve years. It is called Sancta Maria CBS. It opened in 1954.

Secondary school

The official name for the secondary school is St Paul's Secondary School, Heytesbury Street. The present building replaced an older buiding and was opened in the late 1960s: it was extended in the 1980s. Academic performance was quite good up until about the 1980s, but has declined more recently, with the number of students entering university under the CAO system dropping as low as one per year recently (Irish Times published tables). However, a number of science teachers and pupils have won awards in recent years. The school is situated on most of a city block and includes a Christian Brothers monastery which also houses a number of retired Brothers who have served in various other schools. The school has won the overall contest of the Esat Young Scientist competition on several occasions. The most recent occasion was in 2007 when Somalian-born Abdusalam Abubakar a 3rd year student who became one of the youngest winners of the BT Young Scientist of the Year Award for his project, which was entitled An Extension of Wiener’s Attack on RSA.

Motto

The school motto is "Viriliter Age" (translated "Strive Manfully") and is a standard used by many Christian Brothers' schools throughout the world.
