Summertime is a 1955 film directed by David Lean and starring Katharine Hepburn and Rossano Brazzi. It was adapted by H. E. Bates, Lean and Donald Ogden Stewart (uncredited) from the play The Time of the Cuckoo by Arthur Laurents. Summertime tells the story of an American woman spinster from Ohio who falls in love in while on holiday in Venice. It was filmed entirely on location in Venice. It received Academy Award nominations for Best Actress in a Leading Role (Katharine Hepburn) and Best Director. In Britain, the film was initially released under the title Summer Madness. Lean has stated that this was the film he enjoyed making the most. One of the film's most memorable scenes is when Katharine Hepburn's character falls into a canal while filming the San Barnaba di Venezia, which left Hepburn with a permanent eye infection. Also based on the play was the 1965 Broadway musical Do I Hear a Waltz?
