Strain (chemistry)

In chemistry a molecule experiences strain when in a chemical conformation there exist unfavorable bond angles or bond distances. Strain energy is released when the molecule can relax to a conformation with less strain or when the molecule interacts in a suitable chemical reaction. Several types of strain exist:

• Angle strain
• Torsional strain
• van der Waals strain
