Stonewall is a town in Pontotoc County, Oklahoma, United States. The population was 465 at the 2000 census.

Geography

Stonewall is located at 34°39′4″N, 96°31′36″W (34.651099, -96.526655)GR1. According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 0.3 square miles (0.8 km²), all of it land.

Demographics

As of the censusGR2 of 2000, there were 465 people, 195 households, and 127 families residing in the town. The population density was 1,435.7 people per square mile (561.1/km²). There were 238 housing units at an average density of 734.8/sq mi (287.2/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 72.69% White, 5.59% African American, 16.34% Native American, 0.43% from other races, and 4.95% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.66% of the population. There were 195 households out of which 28.7% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 44.6% were married couples living together, 16.9% had a female householder with no husband present, and 34.4% were non-families. 31.8% of all households were made up of individuals and 14.9% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.38 and the average family size was 3.04. In the town the population was spread out with 27.7% under the age of 18, 6.2% from 18 to 24, 25.2% from 25 to 44, 22.6% from 45 to 64, and 18.3% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 91.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 82.6 males. The median income for a household in the town was $19,135, and the median income for a family was $22,813. Males had a median income of $20,500 versus $14,792 for females. The per capita income for the town was $9,741. About 23.5% of families and 25.9% of the population were below the poverty line, including 25.8% of those under age 18 and 29.3% of those age 65 or over.

Sports

In March of 2006, the Stonewall Lady Longhorns won three overtime games in the Area tournament to make it to their first state tournament in over 40 years. The Lady Longhorns defeated Crowder to advance to the semi-finals. In this game the Depew Lady Hornets defeated the Lady Longhorns by a basket. Depew went on to defeat Davenport for the 2006 Girl's Basektball Championship.

Interesting Fact

Stonewall has probably produced more state troopers per capita than any other town in Oklahoma. At least nine current or former/retired troopersare from Stonewall including retired Oklahoma trooper State Rep. Paul D. Roan.
