Sterling is a village in Arenac County in the U.S. state of Michigan. The population was 533 at the 2000 census.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 1.0 square miles (2.6 km²), all land.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there were 533 people, 185 households, and 132 families residing in the village. The population density was 532.1 per square mile (205.8/km²). There were 197 housing units at an average density of 196.7/sq mi (76.1/km²). The racial makeup of the village was 97.56% White, 0.38% Native American, 0.38% from other races, and 1.69% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.13% of the population. There were 185 households out of which 33.0% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.1% were married couples living together, 9.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 28.6% were non-families. 25.9% of all households were made up of individuals and 13.0% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.44 and the average family size was 2.88. In the village the population was spread out with 21.0% under the age of 18, 7.7% from 18 to 24, 26.1% from 25 to 44, 16.3% from 45 to 64, and 28.9% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 41 years. For every 100 females there were 91.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.1 males. The median income for a household in the village was $34,583, and the median income for a family was $36,042. Males had a median income of $26,563 versus $21,875 for females. The per capita income for the village was $14,181.
