The Statue of Responsibility is a 300-foot (91-meter) stainless steel statue proposed for the West Coast of the United States of America. The Statue was a vision of Dr. Viktor Frankl, who recommended in 1970 that "the Statue of Liberty on the east coast be complemented by a Statue of Responsibility on the west coast." Frankl felt that "bookend" monuments on the east and west coasts would emphasize the need for both liberty and responsibility in maintaining freedom. The prototype, sculpted by project artist Gary Lee Price, consists of a pair of clasped hands oriented vertically, symbolizing the responsibility that comes with liberty. The project is being managed by the non-profit Statue of Responsibility Foundation. The Foundation plans to construct the $300 million monument by 2010 through private donations, but reported only $752,000 worth of corporate funding as of June 5, 2005. There has been little evidence since then that the statue has progressed towards completion. The statue is slated for construction in one of four west coast cities: San Diego, Los Angeles, or San Francisco, California, or Seattle, Washington. The Foundation intends to incorporate following elements of the Statue of Liberty into the Statue of Responsibility.
