Background

At the age of 15, Stacey had only recently left secondary school when she arrived in Albert Square in November 2004 to live with her extended family after her mother Jean told her that she was the worst mistake of her life, and that she couldn't bear knowing that her own daughter was breathing the same air as her. Her father Brian had died while working on a construction site and it was later revealed that she has an older brother Sean, whose whereabouts were at the time unknown. Stacey has always appeared to be tough, stubborn, and bitchy, but her inside hides a lonely, desperate girl reaching out for love. She has stolen from people willing to employ her, and has also pretended that a local mugger robbed several hundred pounds from her as she was delivering it to the bank for her bosses, Patrick and Yolande Trueman, as she secretly kept and spent the cash. She was later mugged for real, but saved by Johnny Allen, the father of her then best friend Ruby.

Spencer Moon

Just days after arrival, Stacey set her sights on Spencer Moon, who found her attractive. He convinced her that he was a successful businessman and the owner of the pub The Queen Victoria. After falling for his deceit, Stacey allowed herself to be taken out to dinner by Spencer to mark her 16th birthday on 8 November 2004. The couple went out to an expensive restaurant and afterwards Stacey decided that she would lose her virginity to Spencer that night. The couple had sex and arranged to have another date the following day. Realising that he now had no money left because he had spent it on the date the night before, Spencer decided to make a home cooked meal. Stacey was far from impressed and after a heated argument between the pair she blackmailed him, telling him that she was 15 and he had slept with someone under age. She threatened to inform the police unless he bought her an expensive necklace from one of the stalls. A hapless Spencer did so, but when her cousin Zoe Slater discovered the extent of Stacey's lies and cruelty, she slapped her and made her publicly apologise to Spencer and tell him the truth that she was really 16. She returned the necklace to him, which he exchanged for his money, and never spoke to him again, keeping her distance as she was quite embarrassed over the ordeal.

Zoe and Chrissie's alibi

One of her biggest early storylines came in the form of the demise of 'Dirty' Den Watts. When his body was uncovered from the cellar of The Queen Victoria pub some six months or so after his death, Stacey, being a true Slater (sticking by her family through thick and thin), provided an alibi for Zoe and Chrissie Watts (Den's widow and killer) after Chrissie threatened to drag Zoe into the mess if she refused to give them both an alibi (so Sam Hunter would get sent down for the crime). They kept quiet for a few months until Chrissie was finally arrested for the murder after a tape of her confession got into the hands of the police.

Jean's mental illness

Stacey temporarily returned to live with her mother Jean in December 2005. Her mother's mental illness deteriorated after she had a mental breakdown and blockaded herself in her house. Stacey tried to look after her but after she tried to kill herself Jean was taken into a mental hospital and Stacey returned home. This storyline won a Mental Health Media Award in September 2006.[1]

Stacey and Bradley

When Jim Branning's grandson Bradley arrived on 24 January 2006, he and Stacey went to the Scarlet Nightclub along with Deano Wicks. Deano wanted Stacey to lighten up as she was in a bad mood so he spiked her drink with a drug. On her way home on her own from the club, Stacey collapsed on the street. Deano and Bradley found her and Deano went to get some blankets to keep her warm. When Bradley picked Stacey up and put her on a bench, she woke up and hit Bradley who she thought was attacking her. She got Bradley arrested. Deano eventually confessed he had spiked the drink and Stacey slapped him. Bradley was released and he and Stacey became friends which later developed into a romance when Bradley promised to be a static support in her life. Bradley attempted to have sex with Stacey in an alley. Stacey was less than impressed and stormed off. However they later apologised to one another, and resumed their relationship. They pledged to wait before starting a physical relationship. On 22 June 2006, they had sex for the first time. Although it was initially Bradley who was nervous, Stacey ended up suffering from nerves too. The pair spoke about their worries together first. Bradley told his grandfather that he had slept with Stacey, and Jim was so proud he told Jake Moon, Deano, Martin Fowler and others in The Queen Vic. Stacey then walked in and assumed Bradley was boasting about it so she walked out and refused to answer the door when he came to see her. They made up after she revealed she didn't care who knew. Stacey also told Bradley that she loved him. In August 2006, Stacey discovered she was pregnant after coming back from a holiday, and also saw her long-lost brother Sean in The Vic. Sean and Stacey were reunited and Stacey subsequently confided that she was pregnant with Bradley's baby. After much persuasion from Bradley, Stacey decided to have an abortion, but lied to everyone else than she had suffered a miscarriage.

Sean's scheme

In November, Stacey guessed that her brother Sean was only engaged to her friend Ruby for her money. She told him that she would not stand by and let her best friend have her life ruined by him. Stacey told Ruby that Sean slept with Preeti Choraria, but Ruby forgave him. She was angered when Ruby told her mum that Sean was back. Eventually Sean finished his relationship with Ruby by throwing her deceased father's ashes at her, after he decided not to leave his sister and Walford. Stacey watched in shock but returned silently to the house with Sean, and Ruby left Walford in the back of a taxi. Stacey tried to phone Ruby the next day but could not get through to her. She realised that Ruby was not her friend, especially when she tried to take her own brother away from her. She, Sean and Bradley were forced to leave the house when it was put up for sale by Ruby. She along with Sean moved back in with Charlie.

Max and Stacey

When Bradley's father, Max Branning first arrived, an attraction sparked between the pair. She accidentally bumped into him while wearing just Bradley's coat and nothing else after quickly leaving the Allens' house to fetch breakfast in bed for Bradley. Stacey seemed embarrassed and quickly tried to cover herself up but Max, unaware that she was his son's girlfriend, grinned before asking her where he could get his car fixed. When rushing back indoors barefoot he joked about how "he liked her shoes", Stacey turned round and smiled. Nothing more seemed to come from this even after finding out the identity of each others relation to Bradley. A few months later Bradley did not invite Stacey to his company's Christmas party, telling her that he could not take a guest. A furious Stacey then found his invitation and went to the party anyway. She embarrassed Bradley by getting drunk and flirting with one of Bradley's colleagues, Rhys. Bradley told his friends that she wasn't his girlfriend. Bradley flirted a lot with a colleague, Lydia Asler, and ended his relationship with Stacey. A heartbroken Stacey then went back to the Square and smashed up Bradley's sports car. Max came out of the Vic and saw Stacey. He took her inside her house and asked what was wrong. When Stacey told Max what had happened, he felt sorry for her and rushed to confront Bradley who shouted that "she would not get away with this" after finding his car damaged. Max sneered at the fact he would threaten to beat a woman and told him that he brought it on himself, which made Bradley wonder why Max was on her side. When he returned to a sobbing Stacey she soon managed to start flirting with Max and making a pass at him. Max seemed surprised but also seemed to be under her spell and returned the kiss. Finally, he broke away and left, although Stacey foresaw that he would come back for more. On Christmas Day, 25 December 2006, Stacey tried to continue to flirt with Max who tried his hardest to resist and insisted that he was a married man (aware that if he cheated on his wife Tanya again she would kick him out). Later that day Jean joined the Slaters for a family dinner (excluding Sean, who went to Egypt after finding out that his mother was coming for dinner). The Slaters went to The Queen Vic where Jean saw Bradley and joined him for a drink. When Stacey saw this she ended up shouting at Bradley and embarrassing herself in front of everyone. She got herself drunk so Max escorted her home. Drunk and humiliated once again, Stacey started to flirt with Max and again he tried to resist, but as he was about to leave, he suddenly turned around while taking off his jacket and began to kiss her passionately. They then had sex for the first time. Max and Stacey returned to The Vic where Stacey apologised to Peggy for her behaviour. A couple of days later, Max and Tanya held a Christmas party at their house. Stacey invited herself, leaving Max slightly worried. Bradley arrived at the party with Lydia and when Stacey saw this she left. Max followed her and found her sitting on a bench. He made it clear that he was willing to carry on their affair and when Stacey asked if she was his mistress they started kissing. For the next few months the affair continued and they would find every chance to meet and Max would often favour spending time with Stacey then with his own family. One night, Tanya needed someone to babysit as she and Max were going for a drink in The Vic. They asked Carly Wicks but she was not able to, so she asked her best friend Dawn Swann. Stacey overheard their conversation and she said she would do it. When Max and Tanya arrived home, Stacey hinted to Max that she had left a present in his bedroom and when Stacey left, Max quickly went to look around his bedroom. Luckily he found her present just before Tanya came in and grinned as he looked at the lacy underwear she had left him. Stacey phoned Max on his mobile and said that she was free when he wanted to see her. Max came to her house and they started kissing in the living room. That was the day that Sean returned from Egypt. He went into the Vic and asked Bradley where Stacey was. Sean then discovered that Bradley and Stacey had split up, so he went to the Slaters' to see if Stacey was there. Stacey however, was in bed with Max. Sean then shouted to see if anyone was home. Stacey panicked as she knew how Sean would react if he found them so she rushed downstairs and kept Sean talking in the living room while Max crept out the back door. Sean got suspicious and asked if Stacey had a man in her bedroom, but she said no. Sean then noticed Max's tie on the living room floor. He questioned Stacey, but she lied saying that he was 'just a bit of rough'. Stacey, still worried about Sean's questions, told Max that they should "cool it" until Sean stopped asking questions, but Max told her to just act single and flirt with different men and soon Sean would give up. He also told her that she was the one he thought about whenever he was with Tanya. Stacey agreed and came up with an idea to get him back by making him jealous. She agreed to go out with Preeti and her date to the Vic and soon delights in making Bradley and Max jealous with Preeti's date who seemed more interested in Stacey. Max jealously warned Stacey to stop but she smiled and told him she was just doing what he wanted her to do. Again, after having a few more drinks, Max admitted to being jealous and so Stacey agreed to go home, even though it was Sean who dragged her out of the pub after punching her date. Max and Stacey were later kissing in the Queen Vic toilets, but Max was supposed to be picking up his daughter, Abi Branning from school. Abi was then hit by a car, driven by Deano Wicks. Abi suffered from a broken arm and Max felt guilty and blamed Stacey for the fact that he wasn't there when he should have been. Max then ended their affair but they got back together again in mid-February. On Tanya's birthday Stacey got into an argument with Max saying that the only reason she slept with him was to get back at Bradley. She then accidentally admitted her feelings for Max saying that she didn't expect to fall in love with him. One night in the Queen Vic, Tanya got a bit drunk and started talking about her love life with Max. Stacey looked on in jealousy. Tanya then accidentally spilt drink on Stacey's top. Stacey went mad and started shouting at Tanya and poured wine over her. Stacey then slapped Tanya on the face and the pair started fighting. Max took Stacey home and asked why she was acting that way. Stacey then revealed that she could not carry on the affair, but Max declared that he loved Stacey and that she was like a drug he could not stop taking. Stacey said that she wanted Max to leave Tanya for her. Max was unsure at first but then said that he promised he would. On Valentine's Day, 14 February 2007, Bradley realised that he was still in love with Stacey. He went round to the Slaters' and shouted up to Stacey's bedroom window saying that he loved her, but Stacey told him to go home as she did not love him. Bradley was unaware that Stacey was in bed with Max. After feeling guilty about hurting Bradley, Max cuddled Stacey and kissed her fondly. Max and Stacey were nearly caught out by Max's daughter Abi. Stacey went to Max's house dressed in a long, black coat. Stacey then took the coat off and revealing saucy underwear. Max blocked the door with a chair and they had sex on the sofa. Abi shouted to her dad and just as she was about to enter the living room, Max came out. One day, while Stacey was babysitting Max and Tanya's two daughters, Abi put a video of Tanya's pregnancy scan on. Abi then revealed to Stacey that Tanya was pregnant. Stacey was furious, however she did not say anything to Max. Max then rented out a posh flat for him and Stacey, saying it was somewhere for them to be alone together. They went to the flat and he gave her some underwear. She then confessed that she knew about Tanya's pregnancy. Max tried to calm Stacey down. She then said that she wanted him to leave Tanya, and that he had 30 minutes to tell his wife about the affair, or else she would. Max tried to keep Stacey sweet but she was adamant about her decision. Max then knew that Stacey meant what she said, so he fled with his family to Spain. Stacey was making her way to Max's house, but she was too late as they had gone. Max left a text on Stacey's phone saying "sorry". Stacey was heartbroken, so she cut up the underwear Max gave her and burnt a picture of him. She then had sex with Deano Wicks on the rebound.

Reunion with Bradley

Bradley later admitted to Stacey that he was still in love with her, and that he wanted to get back together with her. Stacey seemed uninterested and refused his offer, as she was still trying to get over Max. It was not until later that Stacey realised that she still loved Bradley and went to his house with pointed Spock ears on and kissed him. Bradley was delighted, however he then got a job promotion meaning he had to move to Paris. He tried to persuade Stacey to come with him but she refused. So Bradley turned down his promotion and proposed to Stacey. The night Bradley proposed, Max and his family returned to the Square. Stacey saw Max's bedroom light come on and then she saw Max. Stacey was shocked. However, Stacey did accept Bradley's proposal. Max went to Stacey's house, but Stacey did not want to see him. Stacey then said she was getting married to Bradley. Max was horrified, and tried to persuaded Stacey not to get married to him. Stacey said that she loved Bradley and that she was with him. Tanya then invited Bradley and Stacey round for a celebration drink. Bradley and Stacey looked happy, and all Max did was look on in jealousy. Max tried to find ways to split Bradley and Stacey up. He first tried to persuade Bradley not to get married, saying that she was not good enough. He then tried to persuade Stacey to do the same thing. He talked to Dot Branning about Stacey's mother's illness, saying that it could run in the family. Whilst Bradley was at Stacey's, Max came round and talked about their sex lives, embarrassing Bradley and infuriating Stacey. Stacey saw through Max and told him to back off. Once, Bradley tried to impress Stacey with a new look with a little help from Roxy Mitchell. Stacey said she liked Bradley just the way he was and kissed him. One day Stacey was in the café, when Tanya collapsed and was sick. Stacey was shocked by what she saw. Jane Collins told Stacey to call an ambulance. Tanya feared that she was losing her baby and begged Stacey to come to the hospital with her. Stacey was unsure at first, but then came along. Stacey convinced Tanya that the baby would be OK, and Tanya was relieved when she was told that the baby was fine. Stacey felt guilty sitting with Tanya knowing that she had had an affair with her husband. Max then arrived at the hospital and was shocked to see Stacey there. Bradley and Stacey's wedding was only a few months away and they were both shocked when Max said that he would pay for the wedding. Stacey then grew suspicious of Max. Stacey was devastated when Sean was sent to prison for the attack of Patrick Trueman on 6 August 2007. She tried to convince the police that he was innocent, but was not able to. Stacey did not feel like visiting Sean in prison, so Sean's girlfriend Carly Wicks went along instead. On 27 August 2007, Stacey accused Sean's ex-girlfriend Chelsea Fox of setting Sean up and told her that she and Deano were the reasons why Sean was in prison. Stacey slapped Chelsea and they both got into a vicious fight. After Stacey was dragged away by Bradley, Stacey was shocked to see Jean in the Square. Jean then found out from Yolande Trueman that Sean was in prison. On 28 August, Stacey took Jean to see Sean in prison. Sean was furious, but Stacey said that he would not get his MP3 player after he requested one, unless he spoke to his mum. Sean then said that he did not want anything to do with Jean, leaving Stacey upset. While Stacey was preparing for her wedding, Jean wanted to make her dress for her, and Stacey agreed not wanting to hurt Jean's feelings, but Sean later revealed Stacey never really wanted her to make her dress. Meanwhile, Sean revealed he wanted to walk Stacey down the aisle, but she refused him. She later changed her mind as he was the closest thing she had to a father. Sean was touched and agreed.

Marriage

In the last few weeks before the big day, Stacey misplaced her mobile and it was found by her mother with many messages from "Jerry". Sean then read these and demanded that he was given Jerry's address so he could stop him from stalking his sister. On the hen and stag nights, Stacey left and confronted Max about their fling. Sean saw what was happening and discovered that Jerry was actually Max. On the wedding day, 1 November 2007, Sean beat Max up in an alleyway, before bringing him to the Slater household, where he demanded the truth. Max insisted that he had just had a drunken one-night stand with Stacey that meant nothing, but Stacey confessed that they had had an affair that lasted for five months. Stacey informed Sean that she had only intended to sleep with Max to get back at Bradley for breaking up with her, but she ended up falling in love with Max. However, she insisted that when he left a few months previously she got over him and she now loved Bradley, not Max. Sean sent Max away and told Stacey that he was not entirely convinced that she really loved Bradley and tried to talk her out of marrying him. A fight erupted which resulted with Stacey telling Sean that he was not welcome at the church and as she got ready for her wedding, she asked her uncle Charlie to give her away instead. Stacey arrived at the church and, despite a few harsh words from Sean who had arrived outside the church, she managed to walk down the aisle without any hassle. However, her guilt began to take its toll on her and after Bradley said "I do", Stacey blurted out that she could not marry him and walked into the vestry, closely followed by Bradley, Max and Sean. As Bradley tried to gently plead with his fiancée, Max angrily shouted at Stacey and told her to get back in the church and marry Bradley if she really loved him. However as Stacey broke down crying, it was Sean who came to her aid and, after sending Max and Bradley out of the vestry, the siblings had a heart to heart, in which Stacey confessed that she really did want to become Bradley's wife, but was unsure if she could live with the guilt of having had an affair with his father. Sean told her to follow her heart and after he left the church, Bradley came into the vestry and yet again began to plead with his wife. Stacey then finally asked him if he could live not knowing everything about her and after he shocked her by saying that they could keep secrets from each other if they wanted, she decided to proceed with the ceremony. After marrying Bradley, the elated couple celebrated at their reception, at which Max gave a heartfelt speech, before heading off for their honeymoon in Lanzarote. However, Bradley's sister and Stacey's bridesmaid Lauren had left her camera in her parents' bedroom. As Stacey prepared to leave for her honeymoon she got undressed in Max and Tanya's bedroom, but as she was getting changed Max walked in. The pair reminisced over their affair and after sharing a passionate kiss, Stacey informed Max that she loved Bradley and their affair was over. She then left a devastated Max alone in the bedroom and left for her honeymoon. However, they were unaware that Lauren's video camera had recorded everything. After returning from her honeymoon with Bradley on 18 November, the loved-up newlyweds were brought back down to Earth with a series of mishaps. Firstly Bradley was sacked from his job, leaving Stacey as the breadwinner and meaning that they could no longer afford to put down a deposit on the flat that they had their eye on. However, Bradley was soon given the job as assisant market inspector. Then, as Bradley and Stacey's sex life began to go cold, Bradley decided to surprise his wife by gretting her totally naked with the exception of a bow tie. However, Stacey had a received a phone call earlier from Jean, who had asked to live with them at Dot and Jim Branning's house as her neighbours were having some building work done in their flat and she could not sleep because of the noise. When they arrived home, they found Bradley coming down the stairs in nothing but his bow tie, holding a bottle of champaigne between his legs and they both laughed at her embarrassed husband. As the week went on, Jean began to prove to be a nuisance and after Dot arrived home from having visited Jim in hospital. Dot could not handle Jean and Dot announced to a stunned Bradley that they would all have to move out and find somewhere else to live. Since then, Bradley and Stacey's marriage ran a bit smoother, but Stacey made an enemy out of Steven Beale, who proved to be serious competition on the market. As their hate for each other escalated, Stacey later found Steven on 6 December at The Arches dousing the room in petrol and preparing to commit suicide after being thrown out of his siblings Peter and Lucy's birthday party by his stepfather Ian. Stacey endangered her own life by following him, eventually managing to talk him out of killing himself. They then struck up a friendship. When Steven announced he was leaving Walford, Stacey tried to convince him to stay. Eventually she went to Ian and questioned his ability as a father.

Discovery

On Christmas Day 2007, Bradley showed Stacey a new flat he purchased for the both of them. Stacey was thrilled that they finally had their own place together. Bradley had even designed a baby's bedroom. He told Stacey it would be for their baby when they had one. Lauren had transferred the wedding video to DVD as a present for Bradley, but left in the footage of Max and Stacey kissing as she was angry with her father for neglecting her. She later changed her mind and threw the gift away, but Tanya found it and placed it under the Christmas tree. Bradley and Stacey spent Christmas with Max, Tanya, Abi and Lauren, as well as Mo, Charlie, Sean, Jean and Dot. As the day went by, Max dressed up as Santa and started handing out presents. He gave Bradley the DVD of the wedding video. Lauren tried to stop Max from giving it to Bradley, saying she had messed it up, but Stacey did not care so the whole family gathered to watch the video. Eventually the footage of Stacey and Max together in the bedroom played. The families looked on horrifed as they saw Max and Stacey kiss. At first Max tried to convince everyone that it was a joke. He asked Stacey to back him up. Stacey tearfully apologised to Bradley and it was then revealed it was not a joke. Later on, Stacey tried to apologise to Tanya, but Tanya was in shock, and could not believe the betrayal. Stacey then told Tanya that she never meant to hurt anyone. However, Tanya was furious and shouted at Stacey. She then slapped her, and told her to get out of the house. Stacey left the house in tears, while Sean stayed with Tanya after Stacey asked him to talk to her. She returned to the Slaters' where Jean told her to find Bradley. Stacey went round to see Dot, and asked if she knew where Bradley was, but Dot snubbed her, and told Stacey that she had lost the best thing in her life. Stacey then found Bradley at the flat. Bradley could not believe what had happened. Stacey tried to convince Bradley that he was the one she loved. She told him she did not want Max. However, Bradley asked her for the truth, and started asking questions. Stacey, who was trying to hold back the tears, confessed everything. She then asked Bradley to kiss her. Bradley responded with a passionate kiss, but stopped as it felt wrong. He then smashed up the flat in a fit of rage, and told Stacey to leave. Stacey was in tears, and she removed her wedding rings and left. This episode was watched by an estimated 14 million viewers, the highest rated show of 2007 and the highest ratings for 'EastEnders' since Dirty Den's murder back in February 2005.[2] The next day Steven Beale took Stacey to The Queen Victoria pub to try to cheer her up. People in the pub where staring and whispering so Stacey yelled that she did sleep with Max and that she did not care what people thought. At that moment, Bradley walked in looking for her. On 28 December, Bradley dumped all of Stacey's belongings that he had moved into their new flat, including her wedding dress and a broken picture of the couple on their wedding day. Stacey tried to explain to Bradley that on Boxing Day she was drunk when she shouted out her affair at the pub, but Bradley told her that he was not interested in what she had to say. He then threatened that he would close down her stall if she did not appear by noon. Steven managed to calm Stacey down as she began smashing up the wedding gifts and he opened up the stall for her, but she eventually decided to face the world and turned up at the stall just before Bradley was about to close it down. However on 2 January 2008, Bradley yet again tried to close Stacey's stall down, because her merchandise did not fit in the required allignments. He continuously kept giving Stacey a hard time, and eventually told Stacey to close down her stall, telling her that it was all over. Stacey told him that he had won. However, just as Stacey and Steven were packing up all of her gear, the market inspector came out and asked why she was packing up. Stacey told him that Bradley had told her to close her stall down, but she was left shocked when the market inspector informed her that Bradley had no right to tell her that, as he had been fired that morning for turning up for work very late. Whilst the other stall holders jeered at Bradley, Stacey sympathetically made to go over and talk to her husband, but before she could a taxi drew up and Bradley's mother Rachel Branning stepped out, declaring that Dot had phoned her the night before due to Bradley's excessive drinking and his poor way of handling his father and wife's deceit, and that she was going to take him home to live with her in Tring. The following day, before Bradley left for Tring, Stacey found him sitting at a park bench alone. She attempted to talk to him, but he told her not to bother. Instead she just sat with him for a while, before Bradley eventually began to talk to her. He apologised for the way he had acted and told her that he was no longer angry with her. A hopeful Stacey then suggested that they can finally begin talking over things and try and sort their marriage out, but Bradley turned the offer down and told her that he was not only no longer angry, but he felt nothing towards her; no love or hatred. He then got up and told her that their marriage was completely over, as he didn't love her anymore. Stacey was then left sitting at the park bench herself. On 4 January, Stacey was horrified when she learned from Max that Sean had been seeing Tanya. She confronted her brother, but he informed her that there was no woman in his life. However, she saw the way that both Sean and Tanya looked at each other. She later met Tanya and an argument erupted between the pair, which resulted in Stacey spitefully informing Tanya that Sean had known about her affair with Max for a long time. Tanya was then left stunned.
