Spitfire is an ale brewed by Shepherd Neame, Britain's oldest commercially operated brewery, in Faversham, Kent. Shepherd Neame is a family-owned brewery which produces a range of cask ales and filtered beer. Production is around 200,000 barrels a year. They also own around 350 pubs, mainly in the south east of England and London. Spitfire is Shepherd Neame's biggest-selling cask conditioned ale. Spitfire is a Kentish Ale of strength 4.5%, first brewed in 1990 in co-ordination with the 50th anniversary of the Battle of Britain. The beer is named after the legendary aircraft designed by R. J. Mitchell. The versatility of the aircraft and the courage of its pilots were essential to victory and it was, and still is, seen as a key symbol of the spirit of that time. Andrew Jefford writes... "Deep amber in colour, generous aromas of tangy malt..spicy hops follow through to provide a complex finish"
