Spinel Sun (スピネル・サン Supineru Sun?) is a fictional character in Clamp's anime and manga series Cardcaptor Sakura. He is known as Spinner Sun in the English adaptation Cardcaptors. He is voiced by Katsuyuki Konishi in the Japanese version, and by Colin Murdock (both forms) in the English version. Yumi Touma provides the voice for Spinel in his false form. His false form is voiced by Philece Sampler in the 2nd Movie. Spinel is also sometimes referred to as Suppi or Suppi-chan. Souppy is another variation of his name. In the Filipino dub shown on ABS-CBN, Spinel's false form is known as "Spinny."

Character and Role

Spinel Sun is one of Eriol Hiiragizawa's guardians, designed to be Keroberos's counterpart. While Keroberos tends to be active and energetic and spends the days playing videogames, Spinel is calm and refined, spending much of his time reading. His true form resembles that of a black panther with butterfly wings and a gem - possibly his namesake - on his forehead. Spinel is often prodded by Ruby Moon, who is a lot more energetic and carefree in comparison and who wishes Spinel to have more fun and enjoy himself more. Ruby Moon is also the one who gives Spinel his nickname, "Suppi" (pronounced as "Souppy"). Every mention of that name irritates him to no end. Spinel's identity is meant to be kept secret until Eriol's final trial with Sakura Kinomoto. This task is successful, although Cerberus comes close to discovering it in episode 56 when he encounters Spinel amongst some trees behind the elementary school. They meet face-to-face, and Spinel can only fear what would happen next when Eriol's cover is blown by his presence. However, Cerberus remains completely oblivious, even befriending the strange monster (as Cerberus references him). Spinel's "weakness", given to him by an amused Eriol, is sugar or sweet snacks. Eating any amount of them will cause him to become "drunk," which in Spinel's case is a state of loud and frenzied gluttony, worse than that of Cerberus. Because of this vulnerability, Spinel expresses a distaste for sweets. In episode 56, Cerberus forces cookies and other sweets into Spinel's mouth, which catapults him into an endless eating spree in which he starts to devour (wrapping and all) all the candy at the sweets festival at the school. In Episode 56, it is revealed that Spinel is unaffected by Clow Cards, as proven when Sakura uses the Sleep to make everyone fall asleep but Spinel is still fully conscious. Spinel is beaten at video games by Kero in the second movie, much to Kero's pleasure. He also appears later as a cameo when Eriol calls Sakura to warn her of the Nothing (The Sealed Card), but plays no speaking role. He plays no further role in the movie, but Spinel makes a special appearance in the Kero-chan ni Omakase short following the end of the second movie in theatres. Here, Cerberus and Spinel share takoyaki (octopus dumplings) and, when they fight over the last one, chase it all over town.
