The southern bastard codling or bearded red cod, Pseudophycis barbata, is a morid cod of the genus Pseudophycis, found around southern Australia including Tasmania, and New Zealand, from the surface to 300 m. Its length is up to 63 cm. The southern bastard codling is similar in general appearance to the northern bastard codling, but with a slightly squarer caudal fin and blunter snout, and more fin rays in the second dorsal and anal fins. The second dorsal fin and the anal fin start about half way along the body length. Body colour varies from red-brown to dark brown, paler on the abdomen, with an orange tinge on the lips, chin, and pelvic fins.
