The "SMART" (Sonoma-Marin Area Rapid Transit) is a proposed commuter rail system in Northern California, USA, intended to connect Sonoma and Marin counties to each other and to the city of San Francisco via a ferry connection. The proposed railway lies along a publicly owned right-of-way that extends from southern Marin County through Cloverdale in northern Sonoma County that roughly parallels US Highway 101. A funding proposal for this system was put to Sonoma and Marin voters in November 2006. Designated "Measure R," it called for a 0.25% increase in sales tax in both counties. In order for the project to go forward, Measure R needed to be approved by a two-thirds majority in both counties. In Sonoma County, 70.1% of those voting supported the measure[1]. In Marin, however, only 57.51% supported the measure[2], so the measure was defeated.
