Solomon David Sassoon was born into the wealthy Sassoon family of London in August 1915. His family hired Rabbi Eliyahu Eliezer Dessler as a private tutor, and the two completed study of the Talmud together. An educator, Rabbi, philanthropist, fundraiser and collector of Jewish manuscripts, he made original contributions to linguistic analysis, philosophy, physiology and Biblical criticism. In 1953 and again in 1964, he declined invitations to become Chief Rabbi of Israel. His varied interests and literary output were maintained until his death in May 1985.
