The name means "Sloan's hero", in honour of paleontologist R.E. Sloan. Fossil remains of the only known species, Sloanbaatar mirabillis, have been found in the Coniacian - Santonian (Upper Cretaceous)-age strata of the Djadokhta Formation in Mongolia.
