Slant Magazine is an online publication that features reviews of movies, music, DVDs and TV shows, as well as interviews with actors, directors and musicians. Roger Ebert has called co-publisher and film editor Ed Gonzalez a "critic I admire" because of his "forcible writing style."[1] The site, launced in 2001, frequently covers film festivals like the New York Film Festival.

Style & Attitude

Slant's music section originally focused on pop music but in recent years more indie-oriented music has been featured on the site. Both the film and music sections are very vocal about their contempt for Hilary Duff.[2] Since the Iraq War began, the editorial content has gotten more political, but the focus remains on entertainment.

Slant in the Media

In a recent article, The New York Times called Slant "a repository of passionate and often prickly pop-cultural analysis."[3] Slant's reviews have often been the source of debate and discourse online and in the media. Ed Gonzalez' review of Kevin Gage's 2005 film Chaos sparked some debate when Roger Ebert quoted Gonzalez in review of the film in the Chicago Sun-Times.[4] The New York Press quoted another Slant writer, Keith Uhlich, in a review of the Michael Bay film The Island.[5]

Rating system

Slant employs two different rating systems:

  • Films and television programs are rated using the traditional 4-star system.
  • Albums and DVDs are rated using a 5-star system.
