Singapore Polytechnic (Abbreviation: SP; Chinese: 新加坡理工學院), the first polytechnic established in Singapore, was founded in 1954. The former campus was at Prince Edward Road till 1978. It is relocated to its present-day location at Dover and located nearby is the Dover MRT Station. The Polytechnic has been awarded the prestigious Singapore Quality Class as well as the ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 certifications. It has also been honoured with the Singapore Public Service Award for Organisational Excellence and the People Developer and Family Friendly Awards. As of 2006, more than 100,000 students have graduated from Singapore Polytechnic.

Our mission is to educate our students and to train them to excel in work and in life.

Department of Educational & Staff Development

The mission of the Educational & Staff Development Department (ESDD) is to enhance the quality of teaching and learning in Singapore Polytechnic. It provides expertise for the professional development of academic staff and assists academic schools and departments in developing strategies to enhance the quality of teaching and learning. The department's key functions include encouraging and leading educational innovations and initiatives, providing consultancy in the areas of curriculum, teaching, learning and assessment, applying educational research to enhance teaching and learning, promoting e-learning and notebook PC pedagogy, promoting pedagogically sound applications of educational technology to teaching and learning, and providing services to support audio/video production and e-learning content creation.

Facilities

  • SP has 6 Foodcourts, 2 Cafes(1 of them is currently in the preparations) and 1 restaurant.
  • SP is one of the few Polytechnics that allocated clubhouses to Clubs Officially under the SAA.
  • SP has 2 Gyms by itself with state-of-the-art equipments
  • SP alumina clubhouse just next to the campus, contains a bowling alley, swimming pool, pool room, a gym and a restaurant, which is available for the students to use.
  • SP has a swimming pool, and a full field stadium.
  • SP also has a Kindergarten within the campus for Staff's children.

Trivia

  • SP has different meanings among many of its students and staff, with the "Sure-Pass" as the most popular.
  • The Oldest building in SP is the Moberly Block which has been converted to become a recreation centre, with pool room, LAN shop, Cafe and many more.
  • SP's current campus used to be a British army barrack.
  • Singaporean, Bubblegum pop superstar Guo Mei Mei once went to school at the Singapore Polytechnic.
  • SP is known as the biggest polytechnic in Singapore according to land size.
  • On the 6th and 7th of October 2006, Singapore Polytechnic staged its first ever musical SuPerstar: The Pop Musical
