Silver the Hedgehog (シルバー・ザ・ヘッジホッグ , Shirubā za Hejjihoggu^?) is a video game character in the Sonic the Hedgehog video game series. He made his debut for the series in the 2006 Sonic the Hedgehog game. He currently appears in four games and is scheduled to be playable in a fifth.

Design

Official concept artwork shows an early design of Silver with a few differences. The main differences from the current final design include a long orange mane around his neck, bright blue eyes and different looking boots. More concept art of Silver was released in an interview with IGN, which was generally less similar to his current design. Notable designs include a hedgehog wearing a futuristic headset and another with markings on its quills. It is also revealed that Silver was originally named "Venice"^[2] after Venice, Italy, the place Soleanna is based on. He was also considered to be a mink, but the idea was later abandoned. Silver is said to have gone through over 50 different designs before reaching his final look.^[3]

Game appearances

Sonic the Hedgehog (2006)

Silver's introductory appearance is in Sonic the Hedgehog for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. His individual episode revolves around him travelling back in time to find the "Iblis Trigger" (Sonic the Hedgehog), who was the cause of his world being destroyed in the future. He is partnered with Blaze the Cat, a female cat who first debuted in Sonic Rush. Over the course of the game, Silver learns the truth about the "Iblis Trigger", and how his world can be saved from destruction. Silver's stages stray away from traditional Sonic elements as his stages center on the usage of his telekinetic abilities. Silver must use his psychic abilities to defeat enemies and solve puzzles. He is capable of altering surrounding environments at will, enabling access to various paths in the levels that other characters cannot, or require springs and other devices to reach. He is the slowest of the three main characters, Sonic and Shadow.

Sonic Rivals

Silver is another one of Sonic's rivals, as he is a main character in Sonic Rivals for the PlayStation Portable. His story involves him responding to a distress signal, though he doesn't know who is sending it. Over the course of the game, he finds out that Eggman Nega is linked to this distress signal. Silver states that he will bring Eggman Nega back to the future where he belongs. Silver's abilities are similar to that of the other characters (Sonic, Shadow, Knuckles, and Metal Sonic) as the game is based on competition. He is able to confuse opponents by altering their controls. He is also given several alternate costumes. As the events of Sonic the Hedgehog never happened, Silver and Sonic are introduced to each other in the storyline for the first time ever.

Sonic and the Secret Rings

While Silver is not part of the story in Sonic and the Secret Rings, he is playable in the game's Party Mode. He is unlocked by collecting 87 Fire Souls.

Sonic Rivals 2

Silver, along with Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, Shadow, Espio, Rouge & Metal Sonic, appears in the sequel to Sonic Rivals: Sonic Rivals 2.^[4] He comes from the future once again to save both the past and his own time, somehow by collecting and hiding Chao from Eggman Nega. Espio, on orders from Vector, follows after Silver and eventually the two work together.

Super Smash Bros. Brawl

Silver makes a brief cameo as a sticker.^[5]

Sonic Riders: Zero Gravity

Silver will be a playable character in the sequel to Sonic Riders.^[6] He is a Flight Type character and his default gear is Psychic Wave, which can turn into an Air Ride to access new areas.

Personality

Silver has been described as having "a strong sense of justice" and it is this personality trait that motivates him to head back into the past to correct the future. Silver is also very caring and believes in standing up for those who cannot stand up for themselves, which is why he accepted Blaze The Cat when everyone else was teasing her because of her pyrokinetic abilities. Although seemingly serious in nature, an interview states that Silver is somewhat immature.^[7] During cutscenes in Sonic the Hedgehog Blaze mentions that Silver is naïve several times, and also states that "He gets insecure when he's alone". Silver is also very kind and caring, as displayed toward Amy Rose, Princess Elise and the Chao he hid from Eggman Nega.

Major interactions with other characters

Blaze the Cat

Blaze the Cat is from the same time and world as Silver. Although Blaze is shy around strangers and strict with herself, she works well with Silver as a partner. They constantly work together to fight Iblis in the future. He is emotionally dependent upon Blaze, and gets insecure when she is not around. Also, Blaze claims that Silver is naive several times, and, before sacrificing herself, she says that this is something she always liked about him. Though, due to the time reboot at the end of the game, it is currently unknown if their relationship ever existed.

Sonic the Hedgehog

In Sonic the Hedgehog, Sonic the Hedgehog is said to be the legendary "Iblis Trigger" that set "Iblis" atleast 200 years before Silver's time. As the events of that game are erased from the time line, their first meeting is in Sonic Rivals. Sonic first notices Silver's confrontational attitude when they first meet, and they do not exactly get along at first. In the end, the two help each other out during the final stage of the game fighting Eggman Nega.

Amy Rose

In Sonic the Hedgehog, Silver meets Amy just as he's about to attack "The Iblis Trigger" and the two agree to help each other find who they seek, unaware they both seek Sonic. When Silver is about to kill Sonic, Amy jumps out to protect her love. She argues that Sonic would never destroy the world and angrily storms off after saying she would rather choose Sonic over the world. With the world broken and Sonic dead, the two put their differences aside to save them. However, due to the time reboot, the two have never met.

Mephiles the Dark

In Sonic the Hedgehog, Silver's frustration at Iblis's constant resurrections is used against him by Mephiles the Dark to ensure Iblis is released in the past. Mephiles informs Silver that in the past Sonic served as the "Iblis Trigger," and uses his powers to send Silver and Blaze back in time in order to kill Sonic before this can occur. In reality, Sonic's death would serve as the catalyst. Silver initially believes Mephiles's lies, but his encounters with Sonic and the others begin to make him question Mephiles's intentions.

Shadow the Hedgehog

Silver is also a rival of Shadow the Hedgehog in Sonic Rivals, and they both also appear in Sonic the Hedgehog. In Sonic the Hedgehog, when Silver first meets Shadow, he mistakes him for Mephiles. This and other events help Silver learn more about Mephiles and his intentions. In Sonic Rivals, Shadow, at first, does not trust Silver's instincts about "Doctor Eggman's" real personality. After realizing that Silver's speculations were right, the two form a bond and they help each other in the final stage of the game.

Eggman Nega

A primary enemy of Silver is Eggman Nega. Upon learning that "Eggman" was really Eggman Nega in disguise, Silver plans to defeat him and bring him back to the future. In the end Eggman Nega is transformed into a card himself. Silver plans on going back to his time with Nega after he finds all of the people who are transformed into cards. Later, when Silver's future is devastated by the Ifrit, Silver works with the other rivals to stop Nega from releasing it.

Espio the Chameleon

Silver is partnered with Espio the Chameleon in Sonic Rivals 2. The two start out as enemies, Silver frustrated that Espio is following him and Espio following Silver as a suspect for the Chao-nappings. The two soon learn to work together to protect the chao and eventually find a friendship in one another. By the end of the story they thank each other for helping save their worlds and say good bye.

Abilities

Silver's primary ability is Psychokinesis. He is shown to use the powers in a wide variety of ways. Offensive uses for his psychokinesis include being able to lift and throw anything in his path including objects, enemies, projectiles, and even other characters, a trait resembling Ristar's abilities. He can also fire shock waves that can paralyze and kill enemies. Defensive abilities include freezing incoming objects and altering the control scheme of opposing players, and making them forget how to fight temporarily. Other uses for Silver's psychokinesis are hovering, levitating, (flying), and warping through time and space during a jump. According to Sonic City, Silver also has the power to actually travel through time although it may not be true due to his interaction with Mephiles to help him go back in time in Sonic the Hedgehog 2006. Silver at the beginning was shown to be slow at speed (due to a cut speed upgrade), compared to the other Sonic characters, but in the game Sonic Rivals he is shown to be very fast. Silver also uses many of the standard Sonic moves and attacks. These include Homing Attack, Spin Dash, Spin Attack, and Super Transformation. Silver is also shown to be able to Chaos Control on several accounts.

The bridge in Silver's theme song bears a resemblance to the Green Hill Zone music from the original Sonic the Hedgehog in terms of both tone and beat. Composer Lee Brotherton stated that this was not intentional, but was noted and appreciated.^[8]
