Shu (Kazakh: Шу, Shu; Russian: Чу, Chu) is a city in Zhambyl Province of Kazakhstan. The city is located on the river of the same name, and is populated by approximately 35,000 people.

Transportation

Shu is an important transportation hub for the southern Kazakhstan / northern Kyrgyzstan region. This is where the east-west Turkestan-Siberia railway is joined with the railway running north to Kazakhstan's new capital, Astana and Petropavlovsk, a city on the Transsiberian railway. There is no railroad from Shu to the south, toward Bishkek; which means that every day a large number of passengers travelling e.g. from Astana to Bishkek arrive to Shu by train and transfer to minivans and taxis to contnue into Kyrgyzstan.

Other places in Kazakhstan with the same name

There is also a town of Shu in Kazakhstan's Akmola Province, with the population of only a little more than 100 people.
